How Can Copy Editing and Proofreading
Services Enhance your Business Documents?

Business Writing Services Guide Dogs Magazine

As anyone who has written a business document knows, it’s very difficult to copy edit and proofread your own words and spot potential problems and errors. When you’re close to the content, it’s easy to miss repetition, incorrect or inconsistent grammar and punctuation, content that doesn’t adhere to your corporate style guide, and text that may be difficult for your target audience to understand.

Many businesses also don’t have a professional editor on staff to review important documents before they are published or sent to clients.

My professional copy editing and proofreading services help ensure your business documents are clear, consistent, well-structured and error-free. I help protect your corporate reputation, ensure your documents reflect the quality of your business, and give you confidence that everything you publish is accurate and professional.

As an experienced freelance editor and proofreader, I can improve readability, fix grammar and punctuation, check for consistency and help your writing sound more polished and professional. While my proofreading services provide a final check for typos, formatting issues and small errors before publication.

I provide copy editing and proofreading services for reports, proposals, policy documents, website content and marketing material for businesses and organisations across Australia. Working with a copy editor gives you a second pair of skilled eyes and peace of mind before your document goes out into the world.

Work With an Experienced Freelance Editor
and Proofreader

Hi, I’m Jane, an experienced freelance copy editor and proofreader. I live on the Central Coast, just north of Sydney, and work with business clients Australia-wide.

Editing and proofreading have been part of every corporate marketing and communications role I’ve ever had — from marketing roles within the trade book publishing industry in Australia and the UK, to various marketing and communications roles in not-for-profits and government agencies. So when I started my business, Breezy Words, in 2018, it made sense to offer this as a service.

Wrangling words (whether they be my own or my clients’) has long been my jam. From earning a degree in Communications to gaining a Diploma in Book Editing and Publishing, to becoming a qualified English as a Second Language teacher, to undertaking many writing courses, I’ve always loved working with the written word and helping others to improve and hone their own writing.

As a freelance editor and proofreader, I’ve edited and proofread a huge array of documents for a wide range of industries. From transforming verbose local council documents into reader-friendly resources for the general public to editing a 100-page educational policy handbook written by multiple authors into a coherent document with one voice instead of many, I’m accustomed to turning even the roughest document into polished perfection.

Having worked as a contract Content Writer and Editor with Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, I also enjoy editing documents to make them accessible to people with disabilities like low vision and blindness, ensuring the language is inclusive and formatted for screen readers.

I’m not just a copy editor and proofreader, I’m also a copywriter, SEO copywriter, content writer and marketing specialist, and I bring this expertise to my work with you. I understand business deadlines and the importance of getting your documents right before they’re published, printed or sent to clients.

What Is the Difference Between Copy Editing and Proofreading?

Copy editing focuses on improving the clarity, structure, tone and overall readability of a document. This may include rewriting sentences, improving flow, ensuring consistency and making sure the document suits your ideal audience.

Proofreading is the final stage before a document is published, printed or sent to clients. Proofreading focuses on correcting spelling, punctuation, grammar, formatting and consistency errors in the final version of a document.

How Much Do Copy Editing and Proofreading Services Cost?

Because every document is different, I provide project-based quotes rather than charging by the hour. The cost depends on the length of the document, the level of editing required, the complexity of the content and the turnaround time.

As a general guide, professional editing and proofreading rates in Australia often range from around $70 to $120 per hour, depending on the level of editing and the experience of the editor. However, most of my projects are quoted at a fixed project rate rather than an hourly rate, so you know the total cost upfront.

The best way to get an accurate quote is to send through your document. I will review it and provide a fixed project price based on the level of editing required.

What Is the Turnaround Time for Editing or Proofreading?

Turnaround time depends on the length of your document, the level of editing required and my current workload. Shorter documents can often be completed within a few business days, while longer documents such as annual reports, policy documents and manuals may take longer.

If you have a deadline, please let me know when you get in touch. Jobs requiring a fast turnaround may not always be possible if you haven’t booked ahead and may incur a rush fee. I recommend getting in touch at least a couple of weeks before you need editing help. However, you’re always welcome to get in touch and I can see if I can fit your project into my schedule.

Turnaround times can also vary depending on the complexity of the subject matter, with technical, financial and legal documents often requiring more time.

How Are Changes Tracked in Word Documents or PDFs?

For Word documents, I use Track Changes and comments so you can clearly see all edits and accept or reject changes.

For PDFs, I mark up the document digitally so you and your designer can see where edits and corrections need to be made.

Do You Edit Academic Papers or Books?

I specialise in editing and proofreading business documents. While I can edit short eBooks and business publications, I do not edit academic essays, theses or full-length books.

How Do I Get a Quote for Copy Editing or Proofreading?

To request a quote, simply send me an email at jane(at)breezywords(dot)com(dot)au or fill in the contact form and I will be in touch to find out more about your project. I will then ask you to send through your document, review it, and get back to you with a quote and timeframe.
